Ackerman Wins 2001 2A State Championship

INDIANS SCALP ST. JOHN FOR 2A CROWN
Ackerman rallied from an early deficit to defeat Gulfport St. John 20-14 Friday
afternoon for the Class 2A title.
The Indians (14-1) trailed 14-0 late in the second quarter when Derrick Boyd returned a fumble 97 yards for a touchdown.
Boyd caught two touchdown passes in the second half to give Ackerman its first state title since 1997.
Quotes:

"We have two sports in Ackerman, football and pulp wood," Ackerman coach
Ricky Woods said. "We've got a bunch of kids who love to play football."

"Everybody's all about football in Ackerman," Bunkelman said. "It makes you try harder, I think."

It only looked like the whole town of Ackerman, population 1,700, traveled to Friday's Class 2A state championship high school football game. (UNKNOWN)

"Whew, I can't even think," said amid a wild celebration afterward. "I told coach at halftime that if I can just get the ball, we'll win."Coach got me the ball at the right place and the right time, and I put it in there for him." said Boyd

When I first came in there, I wasn't used to it," said Telano, who fumbled but didn't throw an interception. "Everybody was telling me that I had to step up, so . . . "

Home of the Indians and Lady Indians

Theyre at it again!
On Saturday September 29, 2001 the Ackerman High School Band went to Aberdeen, MS. They participated in the 7th Annual Tenn.-Tom Marching Classic at Aberdeen High School. The band was one of 26 bands to compete that day. With somber looks and nervous hearts we approached the playing field with our doubts in mind. The band gave an outstanding performance and received a standing ovation as the marched proudly off the field. At the end of the night the band took home 7 awards. They received outstanding percussion and outstanding band in class 2A. But they are still working hard. This coming weekend October 13,2001 the band will be attending their state marching festival in Meridian MS. The students are putting in extra hours to bring home all superior ratings once again. We here at Ackerman High School are very proud of them and would not only like to congratulate them but wish them the best of luck in the future.
